Strongly influenced by her graphic design background, Merle sees ordinary things and ideas emerging and developing in her mind as a never ending flow. Fun-loving imaginings that eventually find their place on the paper, initially for her own pleasure but increasingly to bring pleasure to others. She aims to capture some of her observations in her work, so that these moments may be shared.
Merle studied at Wellington Design School, focusing on Graphic Design and Visual Communication. She also studied at Peter Minturn Goldsmith School to broaden her skillset to jewellery making. After graduating, Merle has been nationally recognised for her ability to communicate humour and fun through her art. Merle has received 12 National Awards for Pastel and is an Artist Member of Pastel Artists of New Zealand (PANZ). She is constantly re-inspired by the humour and happy exuberance of canine friends she meets on the beach. Her own dog Ruby, a Mini Foxie who passed away recently, brought 14 years of inspiration daily and the fun and memories continue to be recorded and inspire. Her new Papillon friend, Ted, brings a completely different set of canine concepts to be considered. Ted is great company in the studio and offers Merle a playful camaraderie while working. Various media have allowed Merle to express her close observation of both the human condition and canine behaviours. "The good times themselves don't last, but moments to be treasured can be captured with art." "I find it fascinating and can’t help comparing - human with dog. Dogs have a deep empathetic knowledge and understanding of all facets of their human companions. I also love the way dogs bound along with others with not a care in the world. They are totally accepting, love unconditionally, have short memories where necessary and are determined to have a good time!" |
